Derek Magnuson Receives D3hoops.com Team of the Week Recognition

MINNEAPOLIS—Derek Magnuson's college career couldn't start much better than it already has. The red shirt freshman has been sensational in his first eight games and Tuesday night the Roseville, Minnesota, native was recognized on the national stage. Magnuson received D3hoops.com Team of the Week honors for his performance this past week, which is just a taste of how good his season has been so far. The Royals went 1-1 this past week, and despite suffering their first loss of the season to Saint John's in overtime Saturday, Magnuson put on a showcase against the Johnnies, who were picked to finish second amongst league opponents by MIAC coaches. Magnuson had 21 points and nine rebounds after halftime against SJU en route to averaging 22.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game for the week. Against Saint John's and Gustavus combined, Magnuson finished 17-of-25 from the floor, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-9 from the foul line. So far this season Magnuson is averaging 17.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game with a shooting percentage of 65.2 and a free throw percentage of 80.0. The 6-7, forward has posted three double-doubles in the past five games, which didn't include his 29-point performance against Northwestern on December 1. Bethel, who stands at 7-1 overall and 2-1 against MIAC opponents, returns to action after the new year, when they welcome Macalester College for a men's and women's doubleheader on Saturday, January 2 at 1 p.m. The Royals hope 2016 is just as favorable at home as 2015, as BU finished the year 13-2 in the Robertson Center Gym. Those 13 wins all came in consecutive fashion, which means the Royals have a chance to stretch it to 14 against the Scots.
